Charities Have Wish Lists Too!

7 steps to accept donations online

Wish lists aren’t just for kids! Nonprofits are using wish lists as a way to reach new donors and get the items they need without spending donor dollars.

Charity wish lists are increasing in popularity and provide a great way for charities to acquire items they cannot justify purchasing with donor dollars. No one wants to hear their donations are being used to buy new computers, office supplies, or to fund travel, but many of these expenses are necessary and can improve the overall efficiency of the organization. These items are often put on the back burner as nonprofits focus on their programs, yet can provide a huge boost to overall efficiency.

Involve friends and family and colleagues!

Best of all, donating to a charity through their wish list can be a win-win situation for everyone this holiday season. Are You looking for something meaningful to give those “hard to buy for” loved ones on your list? Charity wish lists provide a great alternative to gift giving; pool resources among family or colleagues to fulfill an item on a charity’s wish list.

How charities can get on this wish list bandwagon?

First and foremost, be thoughtful and specific about what goes on the list. It should be substantial enough to give donors choices and offer multiple price levels. What are some of the things that could elevate your organization that you cannot afford or justify?

What about technology?

Technology to enhance and expedite fundraising is changing rapidly, but small to medium size charities often cannot afford to upgrade and keep up with the latest trends. Pro-bono technology development is a huge boost to these charities – give your time!

What about frequent flyer miles?

Donated Air Miles for travel can allow staff to attend conferences and seminars that would otherwise be unattainable.

The main purpose of a wish list is to get exactly what you need to be specific. Other needed items may include office supplies, building materials, and gift cards.

How to get the word out and let your donors know what you need?

Start by posting your wish list on a highly visible area of your website year-round – it should be as prominent as your DONATE button. Post your wish list in your newsletters, annual report, and any other publications you produce. This doesn’t just have to be a holiday request.

Social media campaigns allow you to take advantage of special days and holidays throughout the year. Run a campaign prior to Mother’s Day, #GivingTuesday, Earth Day, or International Literacy Day – find the ones that resonate with your charity.  Lastly, add a tagline to your emails with a link to your wish list.

New platforms like Amazon Wish List and Gooddler are making this process easier than ever, allowing charities to post their wish lists for donors to self-select and purchase on the spot.

The opportunities are endless for both donors and nonprofits when it comes to wishing lists! So what is on your wish list this holiday season?
